Dumont Street // VeuxDeux Design

Originally built in 1921 as part of the 1919 Munger Place Revision, this craftsman home lies in the Junius Heights Historic District in Old East Dallas. The current homeowners wished to adapt the home to their growing family’s 21st century needs while preserving the historic integrity of the home by re-creating historically appropriate details that had been removed in previous remodels.

Originally, the house was not tied to any foundation and likely survived Texas’ many windstorms by old growth lumber and wall-to-wall shiplap that hugged the structure together. For the renovation, the house was lifted with hydraulic machinery, new piers were drilled and poured, new floor framing added where appropriate, and the house was set gently back in place and properly attached to the new foundation.

The second-floor addition added 795 square feet and expanded the home to a 4 bedroom and 3 bath. Details like the reclaimed shiplap bookshelves create continuity between the original structure and the addition. In the original structure, the fireplace had been removed. An antique gas radiator and fireplace surround were installed to enhance the character of the space.

This home renovation achieved a refined design that works for the homeowner’s lifestyle and complies with the neighborhood’s historic preservation standards.
